Ode Magazine’s Marketing Efforts Appear Pitiful

I subscribed to Ode Magazine last year because it’s supposed to be an upbeat publication focusing on people and businesses caring about people and the planet. In other words, “upbeat, happy” media.

Soon after I subscribed I started getting invitations via email to renew my subscription. Say what? Then the subscription expired and I was getting renewal offers in the mail as well as emails.

Here’s a portion of the text from the latest missive I received:

Dear Friend,

We heard you no longer care about the world.

We heard it, but didn’t believe it.

Did you lose your interest in people? Did you lose your interest in progress? Did you lose your interest in possibilities?

Did you also lose your glorious, smart, sparkling, witty, engaging, curious mind? We didn’t think so. Then renew now with the the low “Friend of Ode” rate!

I see it, but I don\'t believe it!

I see it, but I don't believe it!

Doesn’t that seem rather sadly forward? I guess that last paragraph was to let me know it was all in fun, but if I weren’t blogging this now I wouldn’t have read past the first paragraph. I wonder how many hours they spent crafting that message. I just thought it was pathetic.
