This is a public service announcement.
I’m sick of junk mail. I have a street address and a PO Box, and the postal service is required to deliver the same junk mail to both. I’ve asked my postmaster not to put it in my box, but he has to, because the snail mail spammers have paid him to.
So I’m all for getting a DO NOT MAIL registry going, and that’s just what ForestEthics is trying to do.
The production of the 100 billion pieces of junk mail that Americans annually receive requires more than 100 million trees, while producing as much global warming emissions as 3.7 million cars. Moreover, this deforestation is occurring in forests that play vital roles in the fight against climate change: the Canadian Boreal and Indonesian Tropical Forest. If left intact, these trees and soils act as a defense against global warming. The Canadian Boreal Forest forms part of the greater Boreal Forest, which alone stores more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem on earth. Yet, it is still logged at a rate of 2 acres a minute, 24 hours a day, to produce junk mail and other paper products.
People TWO ACRES A MINUTE ! Please, take a moment and sign the petition calling for a Do Not Mail registry. I know you hate throwing out trees too.
[End transmission]

I just signed the petition for creating a “do not mail” junkmail registry.
Thanks Joanne!!
Wait, is the petition going to be printed out on paper? :\
Doh! Hope not.
Maybe you have already seen it, but there is an organization called 41 pounds.org (www.41pounds.org) that helps you opt-out of much of your junk mail.
I was unaware of that organization. Thanks for the reference. I think that would be most helpful for those receiving a lot of catalogs. Most of my junk mail is local flyers from grocery stores and those penny saver type newspapers.
